The Jewett 1
Introduced in 1894, by The Duplex Typewriter Co. of Des Moines, Iowa, the Jewett 1 was not the first venture into typewriters from the company. After minimal success with their first machines sold under the name ‘Duplex’, the company decided to produce the Jewett. Named for George Jewett, a founder and financier for the Des Moines company.
A conventional machine for its time, the Jewett is an ‘Understrike’ typewriter, meaning the type bars swung upwards and struck the underside of the platen. It’s also a double keyboard machine, with one keyboard being used for lowercase, and another for uppercase. While the machine was developed in a time where shift keys existed, they were considered clunky, and slow. Not ideal for typists whose jobs relied on speed, and accuracy.
